Animals of the African continent
The animals of Africa stand out for their incredible qualities, as this vast continent offers the ideal conditions for the development of the most amazing species.
African Elephant
The African elephant (Loxodonta africana) is considered the largest land mammal in the world. They can reach up to 5 meters in height, 7 meters in length and about 6,000 kilograms. They have a huge head and body supported by four pillar-like legs, highly developed ears, a long trunk and large ivory tusks.Currently the elephant is considered a vulnerable species.
The coffee buffalo
The coffee buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is probably one of the most feared animals, both by animals and people. It is a gregarious animal that spends its entire life moving around in the company of a large community. It is also very brave, so it will not hesitate to defend its fellows without fear, being able to provoke a stampede in the face of any threat. It has a height at the withers of between 1 and 1.7 meters and a length of 2.1 to 3.4 m. Its weight reaches up to 1000 kg. The horns are thick and well developed, curving upwards at the ends; the distance between them reaches one meter in males. The coat is dark brown or black and of short length, only long at the end of the tail and the edges of the ears.
The black rhinoceros
The black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis), also known as the hook-lipped rhinoceros, one of the largest animals in Africa, reaching up to two meters in height and 1,500 kilograms, can adapt to desert areas, as well as to the most forested areas, and can live between 15 and 20 years. However, despite this, this species is in critical danger of extinction, with only 5,630 specimens left alive to ensure the survival of the species.
The lion
The lion (Panthera leo) is the animal with which we close the big five of Africa. This super predator is the only one with sexual dimorphism, which allows us to differentiate the males, with their dense mane, from the females, which lack it. It is considered the largest feline in Africa and the second largest in the world, behind only the tiger. Males can weigh up to 260 kg, while females weigh a maximum of 180 kg. The height at the withers is between 100 and 125 cm.
Mongoose
The shredded mongoose (Mungos mungo) inhabits different countries of the African continent. This small carnivorous animal does not exceed one kilogram in weight, however, they are very violent animals, being common aggressions between different groups that cause deaths and injuries in the community. They live in communities of between 10 and 40 individuals, which constantly communicate with each other through grunts to stay connected, sleep together and have hierarchies based on age, with females managing control of the group. They feed individually on insects, reptiles and birds.
